Test Shots
In general, test shots are sample cars that were not meant to be distributed to the public. There are a variety of promos that fall into this "Test Shot" category.
- Some of these cars were made during the design process before all the details were added. (Example: 1978-T1)
- Some of these cars were made to test the molds before production began, therefore some of the parts did not form properly. (Example: 1988-T4)
- Some of these cars were molded as color samples for General Motors so they could decide what color the production promos would be. (Example: 1995-T4)
- Some of these cars were made during regular production when there was a change to a different color plastic. These cars will have two colors of plastic swirled together. (Example: 1984-T1)
- Some of these cars were molded in production colored plastic but were never painted (or clear coated) like the finished promos were. (Example: 1984-T3)
- Some of these cars were painted by the manufacturer to be color samples for General Motors. (Example 1963-T1)
- Included with the test shots is a chrome plated 1967 coupe body that was never assembled. This appears to have been some type of factory experiment because the body pins are still intact.
- Included with the test shots are two 1995 Corvette promos that were never released. These cars were produced by AMT-Ertl, but General Motors ordered that they all be destroyed. None of them should have survived.
This website divides the test shots into three groups: "High Value", "Limited Value" and "Painted Color Samples".
The "High Value" test shots were either molded in unique colored plastic that was not similar to the production promos, or they came from molds that were different than the production promos. The authenticity of these cars is almost never in question.

High Value Concept Test Shots
The "Limited Value" test shots were either molded in production colored plastic and never painted (or clear coated) like the production promos, or were molded in a slightly different colored plastic. These test shots are nearly impossible to authenticate because the paint and chrome can be stripped off of a production promo to make it appear like a "test shot". However, if the test shot was never assembled (the hood or body pins were never melted), it should be considered authentic and it has greater value.

"Painted Color Samples" are promos that were painted by the manufacturer in non production colors. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to authenticate these rare cars.
