1998

The 1998 Corvette promos were manufactured by AMT-Ertl. There were both coupes and convertibles made in 1998. The coupe bodies were essentially unchanged from 1997 to 1998. Other than the roof, the convertibles were nearly identical to the coupes. The coupe bodies were molded in either blue metallic or black plastic and not painted. The convertible bodies were molded in purple metallic, red or black plastic and not painted. The purple metallic convertibles had Indy Pace Car graphics, a "CORVETTE" windshield banner and a two-tone black/yellow interior. The coupes were shipped with a removable roof panel. The side mirrors and front and rear bumpers were all separate pieces and permanently attached to the body. There weren't and notable interior changes from 1997 to 1998. The interior tub, seats, seat backs, dash, shifter, steering wheel and steering column were all separate pieces. These parts were glued together to form the interior assembly. The interior assembly and clear plastic windows were inserted underneath the body over 3 plastic pins. These plastic pins were then melted to hold the interior and windows in place. Except for the Indy Pace Cars, the rear license plate was molded into the rear bumper and read "1998". The Indy Pace Cars had a red Chevy bow-tie painted on a blank rear tag. They all had a front license plate that read "CORVETTE". The blue metallic and black coupes used the same 5 spoke silver wheels as the 1997s. The Indy Pace Cars had the same style 5 spoke wheels but they were molded in yellow plastic. The red and black convertibles had silver wheels with 5 thinner spokes. These wheels resembled the optional magnesium wheels. The blackwall tires had "GOODYEAR" "EAGLE F1" molded into the sidewall. The black plastic chassis was the same as 1997 and had a 5 digit code printed in small type. The first 4 digits indicated the Julian date of manufacture (Example: "2837Q" = 283rd day of 1997). The chassis was attached to the body with 4 black philips head screws.

Boxes: Most of the 1998 Corvette promos came in black window boxes. These window boxes had the promo wired to a cardboard tray inside. The tray was car specific because it had the AMT-Ertl number printed in the corner. There was a five digit impression on the bottom of the box. The first four digits indicated the Julian date the promo was packaged (Example: "3147Q" = 314th day of 1997). The black coupes were available as part of a 2 car set (with a black 1995 convertible). This set was packaged in a large "45th Anniversary" white corrugated box.
