1990

The 1990 Corvette promos were manufactured by Ertl. There were both convertibles and ZR-1 coupes made in 1990. The convertible body was virtually identical to the 1989. The ZR-1 coupe bodies had a third brake light mounted on the roof, were wider at the rear than the convertibles and the rear bumper was changed to a convex design. The ZR-1 rear bumper had semi-rectangular tail lights and a "ZR-1" emblem on the right side. Both body styles were molded as one piece of plastic with a separate hood. The underside of the hood had 4 plastic pins. These plastic pins slid into 4 alignment holes in the main body. The plastic pins were melted to permanently attach the hood to the body. The convertible bodies were molded in red plastic and clear coated. The ZR-1 coupe bodies were molded in either dark green metallic or red plastic and clear coated. There were two different versions of both ZR-1 coupe and convertible promo bodies. One version had "1990" on the rear license plate. The other version had a blank rear license plate. There were several interior changes from 1989 to 1990. The door panels and center console were changed on the interior tub. The 2 spoke steering wheel was changed to a 4 spoke design. The dash was drastically changed and fit together with the redesigned center console. This new dash had a passenger side glove box. The convertibles used the 1984-1989 style seats. The ZR-1 coupes had "sport seats" with additional horizontal pleats. The interior tub, seats, dash, shifter and steering wheel were all separate pieces and not clear coated. These parts were glued together to form the interior assembly. The clear plastic windows and interior assembly were inserted into the underside of the body. The chrome front grilles on the convertibles were like the 1989s. The chrome front grilles on the ZR-1 coupes had a finer vertical pattern. The 1989 Corvette promos had translucent red plastic tail lights. The front license plate read "CORVETTE". The chrome wheels resembled a 17" polished alloy wheel with a recessed center cap and exposed lugs (these wheels were unique to the 1990 models). The convertibles had blackwall tires with "GOODYEAR" "EAGLE ZR40" and the directional rotation molded into the sidewall (all 1989-1992 Corvette convertible promos had the same style tire). The ZR-1 coupes had wider rear tires with "GOODYEAR" "EAGLE ZR35" and the directional rotation molded into the sidewall (the front tires were ZR40s like the convertibles). The convertible chassis was the same as the 1987-1989s. The ZR-1 coupe chassis had no X shaped cross member, a different style oil pan and other minor changes. Either chassis was attached to the body with 4 plated philips head screws.

Boxes: The 1990 Corvette promos came in white corrugated boxes. The boxes had a white label attached to the end. The label indicated the Ertl #, year, model and color. The boxes had a 4 digit number stamped on the side. This was the Julian date of manufacture (Example: "0080" = 8th day of 1990).

Note: The interiors of C4 Corvette promos are very easy to interchange. This website shows all the factory interior/exterior combinations for 1984-1996 Corvette Promos. Any combination not shown on this website was altered after it left the factory.
