1996The 1996 Corvette promos were manufactured by AMT-Ertl. There were both convertibles and coupes made in 1996. There weren't any changes to the convertible bodies from 1995 to 1996. There were only 2 notable changes to the coupe bodies from 1995 to 1996. The third brake light was removed from the roof (but was not added to the rear bumper as it should have been) and the "ZR-1" emblem was removed from the rear bumper (but the rear bumper was not narrowed as it should have been since they were not ZR-1s). Both body styles were molded as one piece of plastic with a separate hood. The underside of the hood had 2 plastic pins. These plastic pins slid into 2 alignment holes in the main body. The hood was held in place with the front chassis screws. The coupe bodies were molded in either bright aqua metallic or admiral blue metallic plastic and not painted. The convertible bodies were molded in either red or Sebring Silver plastic and not painted. The Sebring Silver convertibles had "Collector Edition" details added. The Admiral Blue Metallic coupes had "Grand Sport" stripes and details added. There weren't any notable interior changes from the previous year. The aqua metallic coupes and red convertibles had solid color interiors that matched the body color. The Grand Sport coupes and Collector Edition convertibles received more deluxe interiors that were two-tone (red and black). Only the red convertibles had standard seats. All the other promos received "sport seats". The interior tub, seats, dash, shifter and steering wheel were all separate pieces. These parts were glued together to form the interior assembly. The windows and interior assembly were inserted into the underside of the body. The Collector Edition convertibles and Grand Sport coupes had windshields that were trimmed in black. The tail lights were translucent red plastic. The rear license plate was molded into the body and read "1996". The front license plate read "CORVETTE". The red convertibles and aqua metallic coupes had the same style wheels as the 1991-1995 convertibles and were chrome plated. The Grand Sport coupes had black five spoke wheels. The Collector Edition convertibles had silver five spoke wheels. The blackwall tires had "GOODYEAR" "EAGLE GS-C", the directional rotation and tire size molded into the sidewall. The red convertibles and aqua coupes had P255/45ZR17 front tires and P285/40ZR17 rear tires. The Grand Sport coupes and Collector Edition convertibles had P285/40ZR17 front tires and P315/35ZR17 rear tires. The convertible chassis was unchanged from the previous year. The coupes used the "LAST ZR-1" style chassis (that had a hole in the middle of the exhaust). The Grand Sport coupes and Collector Edition convertibles had a chassis that was molded in body color, and then painted black. The black painted chassis had a 5 digit code printed in small type. The first 4 digits indicated the Julian date of manufacture (Example: "1296Q" = 129th day of 1996). All 1996 Corvette promos had the chassis attached to the body with 4 black philips head screws. Boxes: The 1996 Corvette promos came in two different style boxes. The aqua coupes and red convertibles came in white corrugated boxes with AMT-ERTL printed on 2 sides and instructions printed on one side. The boxes had a white label attached to the end. The label indicated the Ertl #, year, model and color. The boxes had a 4 digit number stamped on the side. This was the Julian date of manufacture (Example: "1276" = 127th day of 1996). The Grand Sport coupes and Collector Edition convertibles came in larger black window boxes. These window boxes had the promo wired to a cardboard tray inside. The tray was car specific because it had the AMT-Ertl number printed in the corner. There was a five digit impression on the bottom of the box. The first four digits indicated the Julian date the promo was packaged (Example: "1526o" = 152nd day of 1996). Note: The interiors of C4 Corvette promos are very easy to interchange. This website shows all the factory interior/exterior combinations for 1984-1996 Corvette Promos. Any combination not shown on this website was altered after it left the factory.
Note: There are additional 1996 Corvette promos located in the "Test Shots" section of this website. Note: AMT-Ertl also made 1996 Corvette Snap Kits. These kits assembled just like promos. They're located in the "Snap Kits" section of this website. |
