1991

The 1991 Corvette promos were manufactured by AMT-Ertl. There were both convertibles and ZR-1 coupes made in 1991. The notable body changes from 1990 to 1991 include: the twin vertical vents in the lower front fenders were changed to 4 horizontal vents, the front bumper was rounded off at the bottom and the front grills wrapped around to the side marker lights. The convertible bodies also received an updated rear bumper that resembled the ZR-1 (except not as wide). Both body styles were molded as one piece of plastic with a separate hood. The underside of the hood had 4 plastic pins. These plastic pins slid into 4 alignment holes in the main body. The plastic pins were melted to permanently attach the hood to the body. The ZR-1 coupe bodies were molded in either dark red metallic or blue metallic plastic and clear coated. The convertible bodies were molded in either turquoise plastic and clear coated or white plastic and not clear coated. There are two different versions of 1991 Turquoise convertible promo bodies. Both versions had a rear license plate that read "SPECIAL EDITION". One version had a flat license plate. The other version had a raised license plate that was beveled on the sides. There are 4 versions of 1991 White convertibles promos. They came with a flat or raised rear license plate that read "1991" and either black or clear side marker lights. All the Turquoise convertibles had black side marker lights. All the ZR-1 coupes had clear side marker lights. There were no interior changes from 1990 to 1991. The ZR-1 coupes had "sport seats" while the convertibles had standard seats. The interior tub, seats, dash, shifter and steering wheel were all separate pieces and not clear coated. These parts were glued together to form the interior assembly. The clear plastic windows and interior assembly were inserted into the underside of the body. Only the front grilles and wheels were chrome plated. The tail lights were translucent red plastic. The front license plate read "CORVETTE". The wheels were updated to resemble a newer style 17" alloy wheel with center cap. The convertibles had blackwall tires with "GOODYEAR" "EAGLE ZR40" and the directional rotation molded into the sidewall (all 1989-1992 Corvette convertible promos had the same style tire). The ZR-1 coupes had wider rear tires with "GOODYEAR" "EAGLE ZR35" and the directional rotation molded into the sidewall (the front tires were ZR40s like the convertibles). The convertible chassis was the same as the 1987-1990s. The ZR-1 coupe chassis was the same as the 1990s. Either chassis was attached to the body with 4 plated philips head screws.

Boxes: The 1991 Corvette promos came in white corrugated boxes with AMT-ERTL printed on 2 sides. The boxes had a white label attached to the end. The label indicated the Ertl #, year, model and color. The boxes had a 4 digit number stamped on the side. This was the Julian date of manufacture (Example: "0571" = 57th day of 1991).

Note: The interiors of C4 Corvette promos are very easy to interchange. This website shows all the factory interior/exterior combinations for 1984-1996 Corvette Promos. Any combination not shown on this website was altered after it left the factory.
