1981

Original 1981 Corvette promos were manufactured by MPC (Model Products Corporation). There were only two minor body changes from 1980 to 1981. The "crossed flags" emblem on the nose was slightly different and the fuel door was changed. The bodies were molded as one piece of plastic with separate front and rear bumpers. These bodies (and bumpers) were molded in gray, dark blue or red-orange plastic. The gray bodies were painted "Silver Metallic". The dark blue bodies were painted "Dark Blue Metallic". The red-orange bodies were left unpainted. There were no interior changes from 1980 to 1981. The interior tub, seats, dash and steering wheel were all separate pieces and not painted. These interior parts and a chrome shifter were glued together to make the interior assembly. The interior assembly and clear plastic windows were inserted underneath the body over 2 plastic pins. These plastic pins were then melted to hold the interior and windows in place. Only the shifter and wheels were chrome plated. The tail lights were translucent red plastic. The front grilles were molded in black plastic. The rear license plate was molded into the rear bumper and read "1981". The front license plate was molded into the front bumper and read "corvette". The wheels resembled polished alloy wheels with center caps. The blackwall tires had "GOODYEAR" "CUSTOM WIDE TREAD POLYGLAS" molded into the sidewall (all 1975-1988 Corvette promos had the same style tire). The chassis was like the 1980s and was attached to the body with 4 plated phillips head screws.

Boxes: The 1981 Corvette promos came in plain white boxes. The end of the box was stamped with "1981" "CORVETTE" and the body color.

Note: The "Silver Metallic" 1981 Corvette promos were not available at Chevrolet dealers nationwide.
